There
are just a few places in the world where a biosphere reserve holds
an entire archeological area. The area of Calakmul Biosphere Reserve
comprises the largest concentration of Mayan Ruins and is also
home to countless species of plants and animals, which you can
see if you enter the park early in the morning. The Calakmul Biosphere
Reserve is the second largest protected area in Mexico and is
as large to maintain around 400 jaguars, one of the largest populations
on Earth.

The
Biosphere Reserve of Calakmul is situated in the south east corner
of Mexico in the state of Campeche sharing a border with Guatemala.

Calakmul
archaelogocial
In addition to the old Mayan city of Calakmul, there are the La
Muñeca ruins, Hormiguero and Balamkú. Just outside
the reserve there are several other ancient Mayan ruins. Calakmul
City alone contains 6,750 ancient structures and the tallest pyramid
in Mexico. Cyrus L. Lundell, a biologist, made the site known
to the archaeological community and named it Calakmul (ca = two,
lak = adjacent, mul = pyramid - Calakmul therefore is the City
of the Two Adjacent Pyramids).

Calakmul
ecological
In
Mexico you can find around 10% of all plants and animals of the
world. To protect its biological heritage, Mexico has implemented
a National System of Protected Areas. The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve,
located in Campeche, is such a place and the largest tropical
forest area in Mexico. Help local communities to benefit from
the conservation of jaguars. Promote environmental education about
jaguars. Saving the Calakmul rain forests will save the jaguars
and another 60,000 species of plants and animals. For more information
